The other day we were watching Paul Deen’s cooking show and she was making kid-friendly foods, one of the items she made was a cheeseburger in a pastry puff. James said he wanted to make that for the next dinner, and so I let him.

Taking him to the store I gave him the list of items we needed and he did the shopping:

1 pound hamburger meat (about $3.00)
1 Box of Pastry Puff (about $4.00)
1 Package of Sliced sandwich cheese (about 2.00)

Items we had in our pantry
2 Tbs Ketchup (* Tip try the new lower sugar Ketchup, it is better for you and taste great, if not better)
2 Tbs Dijon Mustard
Salt and Pepper

Once we got home we gathered our items and started by mixing the Hamburger meat with the ketchup, mustard, salt and pepper. We patted out about 12 patties, and cooked them in a frying pan for about a minute on each side.

While James watched over the burgers, I worked with the pastry puff. I floured my counter and rolled the puff about 2 extra inches to the top and the side on the puff. I cut the sheet into 3 pieces (top to bottom) and then cut it in half down the middle.

We added the cooked burgers to the pastry puff and topped the burger with a quarter of the cheese slice, folded the puff around the burger and placed on our cookie sheet lined with Parchment paper. I repeated this for the 12 burgers and then brushed them with 1 egg slightly beaten. Baked in oven for about 30 minutes at 400 degrees.

Last night my bear cubs, dug for Dinosaur Bones, what a bunch of messy fun! I found these kits at the local Dollar Tree for $1.00, they can be found online at http://store.dinosaurcorporation.com/fossilkit1.html, they are more expensive online but still at $2.99 it qualifies for the Cheap Thrills Award!

I gave the boys a plastic bowl to work over, because it is a messy activity. You may even want to do this activity outside. The kids tore into their packages and began digging right in - proving that guys no matter what age don’t read directions. As the chipped away at the egg shaped ball of dry clay, the excitement went through the roof when they found a bone. Some of the guys got a little bored and looked to their adult partner for help and encouragement which made this a great activity do together. After all the bones were found we built the Dinosaurs. I purchase different dino, that that we could see all of them the types that they have are Parasurolophus, Tyrannosaurus, Dimetrodon, Dilophosaurus, Triceratops, and Stegosaurus.

By doing this activiy we are able to complete our make a model requirement for the Cub Scouts, and we overall had a great time working together, talking with our children about events going on in their life. If your child likes dinosaurs I would recommend buying two of these kits and sitting down with your child and do this together, as you dig your way throw the dirt ask your child about thier day, talk about Dinos, even plan tomorrow with your child.
